Principal duties:
Career Advising:
Advise students about a variety of career-related skills and competencies (e.g., career planning/exploration, internship/job search strategies, networking, digital portfolios, behavioral-based interviewing skills, resumes).
Meet with undergraduate students through individual career advising appointments, group advising sessions, and drop-in advising hours.
Advise students about internship, field study, and other high impact learning requirements in SoHE, including how these experiences enhance academic and career success.
Advise students about post-graduation opportunities including specific careers, graduate and professional schools, study abroad, and voluntary service (e.g., Peace Corps, Fulbright scholarships, City Year).
Teaching and Career Education:
Develop and teach 1-2 credit professional development courses to SoHE undergraduate students including the SoHE Career and Leadership Orientation course.
Prepare syllabi, develop course learning outcomes, create student assignments and assessment plans, evaluate and provide feedback on student work including projects and group presentations.
Create online and web-based learning modules to teach and support specific career-related skills and competencies (e.g., resumes, cover letters, interviewing, internship and internship/job search strategies).
Program Development and Coordination:
Provide supportive guidance and career development opportunities for undergraduates in the Peer Advising Program and the student-led Professional Development Series.
Develop a system for documenting and tracking students'' career and leadership experiences, including co-curricular, internship, study abroad, research, and post-graduate plans.
Collect and disseminate graduate career outcome information (e.g., employment, graduate and professional school placement) to academic departments for purposes of course planning and communicating with prospective students, parents, alumni, and other stakeholders.
Support and coordinate administration of BuckyNet including student orientation and registration.
Assist with school-wide career and professional development opportunities for undergraduate students in SoHE (e.g., mock interviews, employer Interviews/presentations, Badger Networking Event, Night on Wall Street).
Develop, deliver, and coordinate presentations and workshops for SoHE academic departments and student organizations related to career development.
Inform students, faculty, and staff about experiential learning opportunities including undergraduate research, service-learning, volunteer, and study abroad opportunities.
Create assessments aimed at understanding the career needs of students and evaluating current program offering related to career services.
Serve as an active member on school committees and represent SoHE at campus Career Services Council committee meetings (i.e., Executive Council, Employer Relations, Data & Assessment), BuckyNet Advisory Board, and BuckyNet Core.
Facilitate and expand relationships with employers, community partners, and alumni for student career development.
Other duties and tasks as determined in consultation with Assistant Dean for Student Academic Affairs and Career Services. This position requires some evening and weekend hours.
Additional Information:
The Career Advisor is responsible for a variety of career-related services and programs that support the academic, professional, and student development mission of the School of Human Ecology (SoHE). Primary responsibilities include career advising, teaching, and program development to enhance undergraduate students'' career and professional development. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Academic Affairs and Career Development (SAA) and as a member of the SAA team, works collaboratively to achieve SoHE and SAA strategic goals.
The Student Academic Affairs and Career Development unit in SoHE advises approximately 1,000 undergraduate students in six Bachelor of Science degree programs (i.e., Consumer Affairs, Community & Nonprofit Leadership, Human Development & Family Studies, Interior Architecture, Personal Finance, Retailing, Textiles and Fashion Design). The School of Human Ecology is home to four academic departments and five research and outreach centers that emphasize interdisciplinary scholarship, applied research, and community engagement. Collectively, the departments and centers support the school''s mission to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, communities, and the marketplace.
Successful experience advising and mentoring college students about career and professional development.
Current content knowledge of career development theory, research, and best practices in career advising and college student development.
Demonstrated skill in developing, teaching, or leading programs focused on undergraduate career and professional development.
Knowledge of database technology and web authoring tools related to career services, digital portfolios, online credential systems, and internship/job placement highly desirable.
Demonstrated ability to develop effective partnerships with business and community partners.
Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with other staff members through inclusive decision-making practices and facilitation of a positive workplace environment.
