Principal duties:
The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of only 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, a brain imaging center, and a clinical bio- manufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.
This position is part of the Lifespan Family Research Program. The Lifespan Family Research Program is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about families who have a member with a disability, with a special emphasis on how these families change over the lifespan. The primary purpose of this position is to implement the goals and activities of the Center for Secondary Education for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (CSESA), a multi-site project. The goal of this national center is to promote optimal development and learning of youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and to provide support to their families through the use of evidence-based practices (EBP) by special educators, general educators, and other service providers.
Project staff will collaborate with 20 high schools during a three year period to increase the number of school personnel with expertise in evidence based practices in ASD and to establish and support sustainable training and technical assistance within districts. All project activities will include an evaluation component requiring the use of evaluation procedures.
Responsibilities will be organized around four work areas: 1) content development, including educational materials on evidence based practices, 2) training, 3) technical assistance, and 4) evaluation.
The work of this position will be guided by the Waisman Center Investigator for the project and the lead faculty/staff from the partner universities (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, San Diego State University). The work will be implemented through collaboration with staff from other related projects within the Waisman Center, and with local partners from involved school districts.
Principal Duties:
65% - Training and Technical Assistance
Provide professional development to the designated school training teams comprised of staff from model school sites, district representatives, and parents. This includes:
Plan and implement intensive, two day trainings for each partner high school.
Establish relationships and provide training, technical assistance, and coaching to appropriate personnel within model school sites.
Utilize a variety of professional development options to provide ongoing site-based training, support, and coaching including on-site visits, video conferencing, video review and discussion, phone conferencing, and email contacts.
Establish and participate in network/learning community activities for professional development providers, model school site teams, and national partners.
Assist training teams in identifying and implementing strategies to sustain Center activities after the end of the two year partnership (e.g., ongoing use of evidence-based practices, support to a training and technical assistance network).
Present at national and state conferences periodically to disseminate center activities and findings.
25% - Evaluation
Collect data on the extent to which project activities are effective, including the use of CSESA created evaluation materials on school environments, implementation of evidence-based practices, and learner outcomes.
Collaborate with the team to document the effect of use of evidence-based strategies (EBS) on child and family outcomes.
Conduct data analysis and write up evaluations and reports for model school sites.
10% - Content Development
Translate information about evidence-based practice (EBP) into resources that are understandable and useful for school teams, professional development providers, and families.
Collaborate in reviewing, revising and completing educational materials (e.g., modules, briefs, video demonstrations) on evidence- based practices for application in professional development (face-to-face, on-line), utilizing project guidelines and templates.
Develop training materials and supports for training and technical assistance to model school sites.
Develop materials for posting to the Waisman Center and CSESA web sites.
Assist in writing reports requested by the lead project team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
A period of evaluation will be required
